What is a learning disability?

A learning disability is a lifelong condition that is different for everyone and usually becomes apparent in childhood, but sometimes isn’t diagnosed until they are adults.

Someone with a learning disability might take longer to learn new things or understand complex information.

They may learn in a different way, or need information presented to them in lots of different ways.

Many people with learning disabilities can live independently or they might need more support with day-to-day life.

Non-urgent advice: Communicating with people with a learning disability

Communication isn’t just about talking, it’s also listening.
‘When you’re communicating with someone with a learning disability, think about your tone of voice and your body language, as well as the words you use.’
